Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is a 2011 British action mystery thriller directed by Guy Ritchie and produced by Joel Silver. It is a sequel to the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes, and like the previous, features the Sherlock Holmes and Watson character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The film starred Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.
During the film, Holmes and Watson travel across Europe with a gypsy to stop an intricate plot by their cunning nemesis, Professor Moriarty. When this film was released it received mixed reviews from critics, however, it was successful in terms of revenue worldwide as it grossed over $545 million.
I like numerous things about this film however, I am extremely drawn to the idea of the fact that they make the audience aware that Holmes is many steps ahead of his opponent by using a clever editing technique which cuts to Holmes’ thoughts in order to show the audience the way in which he’s going to dispose of any challengers.
Secondly, the soundtrack the directors have decided to use whilst these action sequences are occurring compliment them well. Although they aren’t very dramatic in terms of tone and pitch, they are indeed quick and jittery which is very much alike Holmes himself.
Finally, I believe that making Holmes rather normal in the fact that he is able to have regular conversations and stay so composed when he’s looking in the face of his opponent add an almost comic effect. This I believe works well and lightens the mood somewhat.
