HARRY WHITFIELD
Casino Royale
Casino Royale was released in 2006 and continued what was already a successful Bond franchise. Daniel Craig was to play James Bond yet again and many people were uncertain of whether or not he could keep up the role. However, he proved many critics wrong in an extremely action based thriller. With car chases to parkour-style chases, this film had it all in terms of action.
Bond is required to travel to Madagascar in order to search for intelligence with regards to Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), someone who finances terrorist organisations. Although this was another film from the Bond franchise, it was like none other due to an entire new storyline which had nothing to do with previous plots.
The shooting was chosen particularly carefully by Campbell wanted Casino Royale to take place in Africa or Prague. However, the production company ran into some issues when they were trying to secure Africa as a location. So instead, they relocated to the Bahamas and even filmed some in Italy.
Although one could argue that this is just a simple thriller plot that anybody could achieve through a few props, I would suggest that the plot is actually far more complex than most give credit for. The inclusion of the large villain character Le Chiffre adds another dimension to the film in my opinion because we don’t really ever get a clear glimpse of him until the poker scene where Bond wins a huge amount of money off him. Bond is seduced by Vesper in order for Vesper to steal the winnings because she is supposedly being blackmailed by a company called Quantum, the organisation behind Le Chiffre, by using a character like Vesper this further complicates the plot and requires even more work by Bond to fix the situation.
I particularly find this film appealing due to the amount of action that occurs during the course of the film. Craig portrays the character of James Bond extremely well because he uses skill and intelligence in order to overpower his opponent.
